How A Piece at a Time Works
A Piece at a Time is a community clothing closet built on dignity, sustainability, and mutual support.
We operate as a swap-based closet, meaning participation requires contribution.
How the Swap System Works
To utilize the closet, individuals must bring in gently used clothing items to exchange.
-
Items must be clean and in good condition.
-
Donations are reviewed by volunteers before being accepted.
-
Once approved, participants may select items from the closet based on availability and swap guidelines.
-
The number of items selected corresponds to the number of items contributed (according to our current swap policy).
This model allows clothing to continuously circulate within the community.

The Shopping Experience
After items are reviewed and accepted:
-
Clothing is organized by size and category.
-
Participants may “shop” for replacement items.
-
Volunteers are available to assist if needed.
-
Inventory is tracked to ensure fairness and sustainability.

Why We Use a Swap Model
Our swap system:
-
Promotes dignity and shared responsibility
-
Reduces clothing waste
-
Encourages sustainability
-
Strengthens community participation
A Piece at a Time is not a traditional donation-only closet — it is a community exchange
